It’s unfortunate that sex has been such a taboo topic in the church. Sex is God’s idea and a beautiful and purposeful gift from Him.  The world distorts and abuses God’s good gifts, and the church has the ongoing task of redeeming the good.

On January 8, 2023 King’s Cross Church will begin a study on 1 Corinthians 5-7 that I’m calling, “Holy Sexuality.” For three months the preaching on Sundays and the discussions in Gospel Life Groups will be on these biblical texts and topics that are in the headlines in our culture, and also deeply emotional and personal for many of us. Our culture is in the midst of a sexual revolution, and I use the word, “revolution” with no exaggeration. How Americans understand sex, gender, sexuality, marriage, and divorce has changed at a rapid rate in the past few decades and continues to change. First Corinthians 5-7 will touch on these topics. We will see how the transformative power of God’s grace is for all of us, along with the demands of self-sacrificially following Jesus. The aim is holiness that pleases the Lord while avoiding “holier than thou” self-righteousness.

I will preach with sensitivity to children being present in the room. The scriptures are neither crude nor crass. If children are too young to understand, it will go over their heads, and if they are old enough to understand, then they need to be taught about sexuality by their parents and pastors. We can count on the world trying to shape us and our children into its pattern of thinking, and so we need to be shaped first and foremost by God’s thinking revealed in scripture. We encourage parents to be intentional with talking to their children about sex and their bodies from scripture in age-appropriate ways. We hope this series helps you do that, along with some of the resources mentioned below.

KCC Gospel Life Groups (GLG) will be covering the same topics and biblical texts, which will provide an opportunity to discuss the complexities of these topics, ask questions, and study scripture together.  In GLG’s, I encourage you to approach discussing sexuality with both grace and truth. Every one of us is a sexual sinner, and to stigmatize one person’s struggle and give yourself a pass on your own temptations is hypocritical. There is a massive cultural war on these topics. We hope that GLG’s are not a place to pour fuel on those angry fires but rather a time to grapple with God’s truth in a community of love and grace. I exhort anyone who considers KCC their home to join a GLG and be a part of these crucial studies.

If you would like to study deeper on various topics of sexuality, there are a handful of faithful resources that Matt Parks and I have curated for the church. If you’re looking for a resource that’s not on this list, feel free to talk to Matt or me, and we probably have a recommendation.
